Bruges, Oostcampus

   Oostkamp is a village south of Bruges; the pilot aims to show how investments in green spaces, delivered in partnership, can be more sustainable as a result of reduced management costs.  It hopes to establish ‘reunions’ where shared management responsibilities are agreed.  There will be a  a network of pedestrian and cycle paths constructed,  together with landscape improvements to meet changing social and demographic needs and to strengthen social cohesion in a semi rural location. The key challenge will be integrating OostCampus, an industrial estate, into a green landscape and into community life.

Oostcampus: concept plan statement from VLM partners

   'Currently we are working on the concept plan for the exterior of Oostcampus. The attachments show the first proposal of the draft and       some sketches. The design is based on the proposals from the municipality, the nearby school and owners of the shops after a period of    consultation with them.  We made a first proposal and went back to the users for their additional comments'.

A rethink had to take place over the design of public seating which was to be created from old bottle crates from the bottling factory.  It was decided they would not be robust enough, so now they will be used to create sculptures instead

The pictures below show the site as it is now.  This is the main entrance on to the site.  The blue building is the old coca-cola factory.

This will be one of the pedestrian entrances, from a local shopping centre.  There is alot of work to do and it depends on co-operation of the shopping centre owner


Work has also begun on planning for a redesign of Cardijn Square.  This is an old square in Oostcamp and is in desperate need of renewal.  Local people have played a large part in the consultation process and the first design is now drawn up and ready for its second consultation with the community.  This will take place as part of an exhibition.  The new design has changed a little since discussions began.  The plans for the square can be seen below

Originally the square had a basketball court on it, but the local young people have since grown up or moved away.  The community wanted to make it into more of a 'sitting enjoying the day go by' kind of space.  This photo shows what it is like now.  There is still quite a bit of work to do, but this now rests in the hands of the Municipality as it is their land.  If they go ahead with the proposed plans it will be a lovely community space.
