An important part of the MP4 project is to assess existing transnational experiences of place-keeping. What this involves means bringing together a number of case studies from across the project countries to generate a knowledge base of place-keeping approaches which are innovative and considered to be good practice. These long-term management, or place-keeping, techniques are varied and wide-ranging, relating to innovative landscape design, private and public partnerships, community engagement, funding mechanisms and evaluation tools.
Examples include projects which tackle post-flooding riverside management, business improvement districts and web-based reactive public space management system.
As part of the Transnational Assessment of Practice (Work Package 1), an in-depth review of existing research, policy and practice in place-keeping is currently underway. This involves examining a vast array of documents from around Europe and beyond to ascertain what we currently know about the long-term maintenance and management of spaces.
The MP4 team will generate a knowledge base on the associated aspects of place-keeping, including partnerships, governance and engagement, policy and funding. This review of literature will call on the case studies to provide examples of existing practice around Europe (NSR).
This review will be a ‘living document’ which will be added to throughout the MP4 project as new information emerges and our knowledge of place-keeping increases. It will also form part of the MP4 library which will be presented in different formats including full and summary reports, and academic journal articles and conference papers to reach wider audiences.
